Who are sophisticated and non-sophisticated investors? Details about the investor questionnaire

When you create an investor account on Fagura and successfully complete the identity verification process, the next important step is filling in the Investor Questionnaire. For some users, this may seem like just a formality or an extra bureaucratic step. In reality, its role is much more important: to help you invest in a more informed, responsible way that matches your financial profile.

This questionnaire is mandatory for all crowdfunding platforms licensed in the European Union and is part of the requirements under EU Regulation 2020/1503 on crowdfunding services.

What is the purpose of the investor questionnaire?

The questionnaire has three main objectives:

1. Investor Classification

Based on your answers, you will be classified into one of two categories:

  • sophisticated investor;
  • non-sophisticated investor.

This classification is not an advantage or disadvantage. It is simply a way for the platform to adapt the user experience and level of protection offered to each investor.

2. Assessment of knowledge and experience

Investments involve risks, regardless of the field. That is why the Fagura platform needs to understand how familiar the investor is with:

  • investment products;
  • financial risks;
  • diversification;
  • the possibility of losing part of the invested capital.

The purpose of this assessment is not to restrict access to investments, but to help investors make more informed decisions suited to their experience level.

3. Assessment of assets and investment capacity

The questionnaire also includes several questions related to your general financial situation and net assets. This information is used to determine a recommended investment amount and to prevent overexposure.

In short, the platform aims to ensure that investors do not invest more than they can afford to lose.

Who is a non-sophisticated Investor?

A non-sophisticated investor is someone with less experience or knowledge in the investment field.

This is completely normal, especially for people who are just starting their investment journey. In this case:

  • the platform may display additional information and warnings;
  • certain investments may have limits regarding the maximum amount that can be invested in a single opportunity;
  • the investor benefits from additional protection measures.

The purpose of these measures is to protect financial assets and reduce the risks associated with impulsive or insufficiently informed decisions.

Who is a sophisticated Investor?

A sophisticated investor is someone who has:

  • more investment experience;
  • advanced financial knowledge;
  • larger assets;
  • the ability to better understand and evaluate investment risks.

In this case, the platform may allow larger investments in a single funding opportunity because the investor has a more advanced investment profile.

Is this questionnaire an exam?

No.

This is one of the most important things every new investor should understand.

The questionnaire:

  • is not a test that you can “fail”;
  • does not block your access to investments;
  • is not designed to limit users.

Its role is strictly for evaluation and protection.

At the same time, answering honestly is very important because the Fagura platform uses this information to adapt the investment experience to your profile and risk level.

How does this questionnaire help you as an Investor?

Many investors see this step as just a simple formality. In reality, it can play a very useful role in how you build your investment strategy.

It helps you better understand risks

Investments do not come with guarantees. The questionnaire helps you become more aware of risk levels and invest more responsibly.

It encourages healthy investment limits

One of the most common mistakes in investing is overexposure — investing too much money into a single opportunity. The platform’s limits and recommendations are designed to reduce this risk.

It offers an experience adapted to your profile

Depending on the category you fall into, the platform may display additional information or apply different investment rules.

It supports financial education

For many users, this questionnaire represents their first real contact with concepts such as:

  • diversification;
  • risk tolerance;
  • capital protection;
  • investment experience.

What happens after completing the questionnaire?

Once the questionnaire is completed:

  • you can top up your account;
  • you can start investing on the platform;
  • you can analyze available opportunities and build your own portfolio.
